Ponting shows off new head of hair

Sept 2007

His name isn't listed alongside Shane Warne's on the Advanced Hair website, but speculation is rife that Ricky Pointing has joined his former teammate in the "yeah yeah" club.

Following years of thinning, Ponting stepped out at the ICC awards this week sporting a thick crop of hair - sparking speculation the Australian captain has rolled out the covers and joined Warne and Greg Matthews in the fight against baldness.

Ponting's camp was last night refusing to confirm whether he had received treatment.

But a hirsute make-over would come as no surprise given the Australian Test captain recently dropped the "y" off his christian name in a quest for greater marketability.

Satisfied hair therapy clients last night voiced what everyone else was thinking - that Rick has a brand new 'do.

"There is no doubt he has had a touch-up and had some treatment," said Advanced Hair client Mark Geyer. "I saw it yesterday and he has definitely joined the family."

The Daily Telegraph combed the internet for photographic proof of Pointing's alleged "treatment".

Pictures taken less than a year ago show Pointing with less hair on his head than grass on an Indian pitch. On Tuesday night, however, his crop of hair looked more like the neatly manicured outfield of the SCG.

Former Penrith NRL star Geyer suspects Pointing has undergone laser therapy for hair loss.

"I think he has had a six-month course of laser therapy and it looks a lot better," Geyer said.

"He looks like a 21-year-old again. It looks like a big dose of laser because something has definitely been done."

Toughman Geyer began treatment for hair loss about two years ago. Cricketers Warne, Matthews and Graham Gooch did the same, with the trio famously leading Advanced Hair's "yeah yeah" campaign.

The man who masterminded those TV commercials, publicist Max Markson, last night agreed Ponting appeared to be enjoying the benefits of Advanced Hair.

"It certainly looks as though he has more hair," Markson told The Daily Telegraph.

After helping Warne and co get new threads, Markson said Ponting's new style was definitely not the result of a transplant or hair plugs.

"If he has had anything done, it's laser therapy, which means re-growing his own hair," he said.

Advanced Hair was last night refusing to comment about Ponting, whose manager was also tight-lipped.

But, according to Markson, the Australian cricket team's five-month break would have provided Ponting with enough time to undergo the treatment, which also involves tablets and lotion.

Those who undergo the treatment must continue to take the medication for the rest of their lives.

Geyer added that the benefits were obvious.

"When you have kids you want to stay young as long as you can and do whatever you can," he said.

"Some people get to a point and say 'stuff it, I'll just let it go' but not for this big fella.

"I think it's great. I hope Pointing comes out and admits it."

Tony Pearce, from rival hair-loss therapy company National Trichology Services, said he would offer his services to Pointing free of charge.

"We were actually going to contact him and offer him free treatment," said Pearce. "'But it appears someone has got to him first."
