California peanut milk cult growing

Peanut milk, invented by a Taiwanese burger joint owner in San Francisco, is said to cure baldness, cure gum disease and soothe psoriasis.

There is no milk in the product made by Jack Chang, but rather boiled down peanuts, grains, herbs and spices, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Chang, 58, developed the product when his own teeth became too loose to eat peanuts. He says his gums have since healed and he can once again chew his favorite snack.

When regular customers noticed him drinking it, a trend was born, and now fans say it strengthens patients with AIDS and cancer, heals wounds faster, prevents colds, reduces symptoms of menopause and is a hangover cure.

Chang's company processes 2,000 pounds of peanuts a month and ships about 240,000 bottles a year around the city. The 10.5-ounce containers of peanut milk sell for about $1.69.

His market is expanding among holistic food vendors and peanut milk will soon be sold in Northern California, Oregon and Washington state, the newspaper said.
