Worried About Going Bald?

NEW SURVEY SHOWS PROBLEM OFTEN BEGINS AS EARLY AS THE TWENTIES

You might think that losing your hair is only something that happens in middle age, but you'd be wrong. New research by Regaine has found that 39 per cent of men who lose their hair, start thinning out in their twenties.

In fact, the twenties are the most common age for hair loss to begin and losing hair when so young can really dent a man's self-esteem.

Men are acutely aware that hair has sex appeal and that very few of the modern heartthrobs are bald or have thinning hair. Asked when they thought their hair would start to thin, 58 per cent of men have convinced themselves that their hair wouldn't start thinning until their 50s.

Even though men may not talk about their hair as often as women, their hair and how much they have is extremely important to them. Those who lose their hair can be left devastated and depressed at the prospect of not being able to do anything about it.

In fact, nearly all of the men questioned in the survey (99%) didn't believe that any action could be taken to address their hair loss. They were not aware of Regaine, the only clinically proven hereditary hair loss treatments available for men available to buy at pharmacies or online.

Dermatologist Dr Tony Chu thinks men may be encouraged if they realised how easy it is to get effective treatment. “GPs are known to typically be unsympathetic to the problem of hereditary hair loss and many men would feel uncomfortable going to their GP to ask for advice.

The attraction of an over the counter treatment is that men can bypass their GP and choose for themselves to do something about their hair loss.”

Even though there are treatments available, hair loss is still a worry, especially for those seeing the hereditary pattern. When men were asked what worried them about growing old, a quarter of men said hair loss was their second biggest worry. Among 18-25 year-olds, 19 per cent said this was their first worry about growing old. And 38 per cent of men said they felt ‘very or quite insecure' about hair loss, whether or not they had so far experienced it.
