Hair Loss and the Future of Healthy Hair

Although traditionally an issue for men, hair loss is also becoming a more recognized problem for women.

According to an article in the February issue of New You magazine, titled My Hair Lady, in 2010 about 35% of patients who sought treatment for hair loss were women, up from 28% in 2006.

Thankfully, with this growing demand have come new, innovative approaches to treat hair loss and grow healthy hair.

Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Medical Corporation in Beverly Hills, is on the front lines of this battle and can attest to the statistics. “Truth be told,” says Dr. Ourian, “the percentage of women coming to our office seeking hair loss treatments is even higher than the International Society of Hair Restorations number of 35%.”

Dr. Ourian explains that there are two main causes for female hair loss. The first is hereditary, which causes a woman’s hair to thin but in a way that’s distinct from classic male pattern baldness.

The second cause is damage or trauma due to medication, hormonal change, bad diet, stress, or chemical treatments.

Early intervention is important, says Dr. Ourian, and the women coming to see him to discuss their hair loss are getting younger and younger.

Not too long ago, women experiencing hair loss had only two options: surgical hair transplantation or Rogaine. Today’s hair transplants involve smaller transplantation units, just one to three follicles at a time.

There are newer, safer oral medications, as well as effective topical products. “We recently began offering Revivogen to our patients,” says Dr. Ourian, “I appreciate that they use a scientific approach to treating hair loss.”

The future of hair loss treatments seems bright. There are research teams working on mapping the genes for hair loss, hoping to stop hair loss altogether by dealing with it at the source. Allergan, the makers of Botox, is said to be developing a product for hair loss based on Latisse, their eyelash growing product.
