Dr. Sanusi Umar of DermHair Clinic Featured on Good Morning America for Eyebrow Transplant

Good Morning America talks to Dr. Sanusi Umar about eyebrow transplant, a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure to improve the shape and thickness of eyebrows.

Dr. Umar has performed this procedure on many patients at his Redondo Beach-based office, DermHair Clinic.

“If your eyes are the window to your soul, then your eyebrows are the frame,” says Elisabeth Leamey, the ABC News correspondent for GMA. Eyebrows provide the face with a critical aesthetic balance that is lost if the hair is too thin or completely missing.

A loss of hair in this area commonly occurs due to excessive cosmetic plucking, but can also happen because of thyroid dysfunction, trichotillomania, facial burns, scarring, or simply because of genetics.

If a person cannot grow his or her eyebrows naturally, the alternatives are dismaying. Tattoos require bi-annual retouching and cosmetic pencil requires daily application, which can be daunting day in and day out. Pamela Pemrose, a patient featured on the Good Morning American segment, discloses, “It’s a little embarrassing. It affects my self esteem.” She penciled her eyebrows for 10 years to conceal the genetic bald patches that came with age.

Dr. Umar’s eyebrow transplant gave her the eyebrows she’d always wanted. The GMA segment shows similar stories of two other DermHair Clinic patients, Sarah Tirosh and Shannon Morrison. Both women needed the procedure to grow hair along their previously sparse eyebrows.

Dr. Umar’s approach to eyebrow transplant is continually successful because it is unique. He uses follicular unit extraction and his signature excision tool, uGraft, to enable the efficient removal of donor hair from non-traditional areas—or areas outside the scalp. These areas commonly include the arms and legs for eyebrow transplant, since the caliber and length of these follicles best mimic eyebrow hair.

Follicular unit extraction using hair from the body is known as body hair transplant, or BHT. BHT can facilitate the restoration or repair of critical balding regions beyond the eyebrows. Dr. Umar has used body hair transplant to successfully restore entire bald scalps of men who would be inoperable by any other means.

Similar to eyebrow loss, scalp hair can be lost to pattern baldness, several types of illness, burns, and surgical scars. Body hair transplant is often the only way to restore hair in these extreme cases.

The use of non-head donor follicles for the restoration of significant hair loss amid the eyebrows and scalp is a profound development in hair transplantation. The technology and resources in these areas continue to improve and expand, with Dr. Umar leading the way.
